Yoga is the last thing that comes to our mind when it comes to HIIT or cardio but whomsoever can pull off five cycles of these five yoga poses back to back-well, weight loss is inevitable for that person,” explains Iyer.Let’s know what these five yoga poses are: 1. Utkatasana or yogic squat Holding an asana might look simple but the amount of energy and strength they require is immense. “Doing utkatasana will not just burn calories but it will also burn the cellulite around your quads and help them tone. Also, it helps in increasing metabolism which ultimately leads to more weight loss ,” says Iyer. 2. Chaturanga dandasana or four-limbed staff pose “There are a lot of core exercises out there but the impact of each one of them is different. But this pose keeps your entire core at the epicentre and helps you get a flat belly. Plus it helps in strengthening your arms and shoulder,” suggests the expert.3. Supported Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana) Balancing poses can be very beneficial when it comes to building the muscles that help the knee. However, if your knee is currently inflamed, you want to avoid anything that will put this much weight on the joint. By using the support of a block, you can work on strengthening the muscles in this pose and stretching the hamstrings without putting stress on your knee. The first time you do this pose, use an empty wall and a block for support. Stand with your back to the wall and rotate your right foot so that the outside edge of

Yoga: A Corporate Benefit for a Better Work-Life Balance

Not only do we have quite a few yoga enthusiasts among our employees, but free in-house yoga lessons are also among the benefits we offer to the InterNations Team in Munich. They have been a fixture for more than five years now, taking place on Wednesday night right after work. When Feel Good Manager Denise joined InterNations in her newly created role back in 2014, she wasn’t just put in charge of making sure that our local office ran smoothly. It also fell to her to conceptualize some perks that our team members would appreciate. Yoga was featured on this list from the very beginning. More and more companies are now offering yoga as a corporate benefit. Denise herself had been practicing yoga on and off since she was about 18, but it was more than her personal passion that prompted her to suggest it as a potential benefit to our founders and co-CEOs. Before her job at InterNations, she used to work at a social startup that ran a mentoring program for high-school students and that provided weekly yoga lessons in the office. Having a yoga teacher come to the office in the morning saved her and her colleagues a lot of time; the convenience made quite a difference to them. Yoga at home is different. As someone who loves going into the yoga studio, moving my practice home was difficult at first. I missed the community of fellow yogis and yoga teachers practicing beside me and the ability to focus inward and tune everyt

Yoga can be daunting for those with knee problems. Unfortu

nately, that’s a lot of us, myself included. Below are the yoga poses I used to strengthen my knee after surgery. Three years into my yoga career, I suffered a meniscus tear. Physical therapy, ice, and painkillers were not enough to ward off surgery. I had to go under the knife. My bones and tendons blocked the doctors from seeing the exact location of the tear in ultrasounds, so exploratory surgery had to be performed before the surgeon could fix the problem. By the time they were done, my leg looked like it had been beaten with a meat tenderizer and my muscles and soft tissue were in a sorry state. Giving up my career as a yoga instructor was not an option for me, so I took the time to learn how to protect my knee by strengthening the muscles that support it. Here are the exact yoga moves I practiced to strengthen and stretch my knees. However, make sure to always seek advice from your physician before beginning any exercise or rehabilitation regimen, especially if you have any unique or special medical conditions related to your knees.   5 Yoga Poses for Stronger Knees: 1. Supported Chair Pose (Utkatasana) This pose will strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings, and abductors. It also increases blood flow to the lower region of the body, which can help with fluidity of movement. Chair pose is typically practiced away from the wall, but that may require more strength than your knees are able to handle at the mome

40 benefits of yoga practice

1 — Yoga provides an escape from a normally busy and chaotic life Even just 10 minutes a day can be all it takes to give you the benefit of a little “me” time and feel more relaxed and ready for your crazy day. 2 — Yoga encourages you to eat better It just does. You don’t feel like downing a burger and fries after a yoga session. You’re more mindful and appreciative of your body and you want to treat it well. 3 — Increased flexibility This is huge for feeling well and ridding ourselves from the achiness that many of us get in our lower back, hips, and limbs. 4 — A stronger body Yoga is proof that body weight exercising can be just as effective, if not more effective than lifting weights. Reducing inflammation can prevent heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. 9 — Reduces pain in the body This may be a result of increased flexibility, mobility and circulation

As far as body parts go, feet don’t seem to get the attention they deserve. After all, they do so much for us. They hold us up, literally. They let us get our 10,000 steps every day. They keep us going when we hit the dance floor from time to time or go full speed on a spin bike. It’s only right that we show them some love. And yoga is one great way to do that. Whether you just ran a marathon or your feet are achy from a long day of shopping, here’s 10 yoga poses and stretches to try. Your feet (and toes) will thank you later.Yogi toes To help improve your balance and show your little piggies some love, certified yoga therapist Ann Swanson, MS, recommends doing yogi toes. “While standing or seated in a chair, spread your toes as wide as possible and slowly place them firmly down on the ground,” she says. This will feel especially delightful after a long day on your feet or if you’ve been strutting around in heels. 2. Ankle pumps If your feet are swollen, ankle pumps will offer some relief and promote good circulation. You can either do it sitting in a chair or on the floor or laying down to simultaneously decompress your entire body. All you do is go back and forth from pointing your toes like a ballet dancer and then flexing your ankles. “This activates muscles in your lower legs aiding the return of blood and fluids back to your heart and reducing ankle and foot swelling,” Swanson says. 3. Inversions and eversions To warm up your ankles, Swanson recommends inversions a

Today is International Day of Yoga, a day to celebrate this ancient practice that India gave to the world. Yoga is not just a fad. It is not just an exercise. Ask those who are ardent practitioners and they will tell you Yoga is a way of life. It’s an integral part of their lives. The word ‘yoga’ derived from Sanskrit  means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of the body and consciousness. The theme for the 2017 celebration, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is ‘Yoga for Health‘. The theme highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving an equilibrium between mind and body. If you are still on the fence about Yoga, we give you the following reasons to incorporate Yoga in your life. 1. Physical benefits Practising any form of yoga will impact positive changes in your body. How many of you actually pay much attention to your gaze while doing yoga? Many of us. But the position of your eyes in yoga is as important as the position of other body parts while performing a pose. Your eye gaze is called the Drishti gaze, which is a tactic that improves your practice.Drishti is the focal point where you bring your focus. This focal point supports your alignment, focus, balance and concentration, say, yoga experts. When the vision is used along with intent, it indicates the rest the body about how the shape should be. Drishti gaze is important during yoga poses but to really notice its effects, you should try it while trying balancing poses. For example, while doing the tree pose when you are balancing your body on one leg, your gaze should be at something that is not moving. This boosts your concentration and provides you with something tangible to focus on while your body tries to adjust. The gaze helps in maintaining an overall balance when you are doing yoga. The gaze of your eyes signifies how the rest of your body settles in a pose. For example, if you are doing a cobra pose, if you drop your vision down, it forces your entire neck, head and spine to slump. When you look forward and up, it encourages the chest and heart opener exercises to work better. When you focus, your body twists more properly and deeply and thus helps in a better pose formation. While doing yoga, we focus more on movement and breath, but when we start focusing on eyes, onlin

Yoga experts believe that cold weather can give relief to people suffering from heat and heat. Y…

Yoga experts believe that cold weather can give relief to people suffering from heat and heat. Yoga guru Gulshan Kumar said on Sunday that the lunar pulse in the human body provides coolness to the body. Throughout the life, the breath flows through two holes in the nose. The left nasal cavity is called Chandra Swar i.e. Ida Nadi while the right hole is called Surya Swar i.e. Pingala Nadi. If the breath comes from the moon, then the body gets cold and if the sun comes from the right nostrils, then the body produces heat. He told that in this scorching heat, when the temperature is reaching 40 to 48 degrees Celsius, the risk of heat waves starts increasing due to strong hot winds and heat wave. Due to this, the risk of heat stroke increases due to increasing body temperature due to lack of water and salt due to perspiration from our body. In such a situation, stroke can be prevented only if the breathing of yoga pranayama is done. The yoga guru said that if the body temperature has increased and is up to 104 degrees F, then there is a possibility of heat stroke. Symptoms of dizziness, vomiting, fainting, muscle spasms, difficulty in breathing, etc. can occur when you have heat stroke. He said that the practice of yoga can be avoided to avoid heat stroke but heat stroke can be prevented if compound pranayama is done in advance. Sheetali Pranayam, Shetkari Pranayam, Chandra Piercing Pranayam are beneficial, which can prevent sunlight. Yoga at home , yoga at online in
